January Tracks

Arizona is known for her rocky landscapes.  January is the perfect month to explore the trails, rock climb, capture fantastic rock images, visit rock and mineral shows and start an inexpensive rock collection.  January typically features beautiful cool days, complete with sunny skies and golden afternoon light.  Some years bring us rainy periods to green up the desert, but most storms are fairly short-lived. Remember trekking safety in the rain.  Stay out of the washes due to the "tidal wave" of water that can roar down dry channels.

In January, watch for:
  • Interesting rock formations - During the cooler months, it is safer to explore bouldery areas as our reptile friends are less active. It is still important to proceed using good observation and safety habits.
  • Favorite Rock Exploration Sites-
  • Quartzite, Tucson and other towns throughout the state have rock, mineral and gem shows going on during January and February.  Vendors come from all over with rocky wonders and prices can be attractive.
  • Bird and Raptor activity
